New Year…New Trials…Same God…Greater Victory!

January 21st, 2010

2010 has begun with a break-neck jolt to the senses!

Two months flew by without a web update and this past Christmas season was one of the busiest we have had around Tenth Avenue in a long time. Then with all the changes taking place around the church, it’s been hard to keep up with everybody and everything. Some days have been full from dawn ’til late at night. Yet we kept moving forward and somehow found ourselves in the middle of January of 2010!

Already this year has been unbelievable! In the world setting, the crisis in Haiti has captivated our emotions, the health care debate has dominated conversations and the financial woes of our nation have come crashing down close to home.

In the church setting, we’ve said goodbye Charles Taylor who went home to be with the Lord, our new music ministry is kicking into high gear, and it’s all hands on deck as we tweek our Living Room service and make it a weekly event.

The church is in the best financial shape in a decade even though our attendance doesn’t look much different when you crunch numbers. This is in part because of poor weather but even more due to illness and other medical issues that have plagued many in the congregation…But God is bringing healing! Just today God brought healing to Owen J. and caused his heart to go back into rhythm! And this week we’ve gained one addition through the birth of Noah G.!

Our youth are preparing for Jr. and Teen Talent, as well as raising money for Smokey Mt. Winterfest. These students are hungry for God and the StandOut youth group continues to go deeper!

In addition, we are halfway into the Divine Encounter. We’ve joined 16 other churches to fast and pray for God to do a work in our city. On Wednesdays we’ve been gathering together at to have a combined Bible study that has been incredibly received. Last night God showed up in a powerful way in our adult session at Christ Temple…while the youth were seeking God themselves at Jefferson Avenue. No one can know what the result of all this can be…but whatever it is it’s going to be great!

So even with new trials in a new year, the same God who brought us through 2009 is going to take us to greater victory in 2010!

Blessings!

Pastor Darrell

Moving Forward

March 29th, 2009

Hard to believe that Easter is upon us. Palm Sunday is one week away, and yet it seems like only yesterday that we were preparing for Christmas. This winter has flown by, and now springtime has finally sprung.

We had a tremendous concert with Allen Asbury and the Brooks Brothers on Saint Patrick’s Day, and all ages were able to enjoy the evening together. We were so blessed to have them visit with us, and my opportunity to catch up with Allen, an old friend from West Coast Christian College, was a personal treat.

Now, just as spring has caused us to spring forward, we move forward. On Palm Sunday we will conclude our two part series on “Moving Into His House” (Part one is available HERE). Then on Easter Sunday we will celebrate the Resurrection through music, the Lord’s Supper, a special illustrated sermon, our annual Easter Egg hunt, and finally a special evening service celebrating Easter through the arts.

So as we move forward, what comes next? The answer is something we are praying about while tossing around different ideas of how to move tenthavecog into a more missional approach to winning our community for Christ. That said, please be in prayer about the new wine skins that are going to be created to serve the new wine. As we continue to progress, we will post more specifics in this blog as well as tweaking our website for the necessary adjustments.

Until then, keep moving forward, and get ready because seasons of spring planting are intended to bring about seasons of harvest…the harvest is coming!

Catching Up Again

March 4th, 2009

These past few months have been hectic. So much has happened around tenthavecog that it has been difficult to keep up. At last we have had a few moments to upload a few new podcasts and update the calendar. This should be a full time job, and as God continues to bless the church, maybe we can look at passing this task on to someone more qualified. Until then, we will keep trying to get it right.

Do make sure you keep March 17th open for a concert with Allen Asbury and the Brooks Brothers at 7:00 PM. This will be a great time of ministry in concert for all ages to enjoy…And since its St. Patty’s day you might want to wear your Marshall Green.

So we keep catching up, and someday we might just pass ourselves…until then let’s keep going!

Caution: Christmas is Coming

December 1st, 2008

Well it is official, Christmas is on its way. In the coming weeks the church will undergo its yearly Christmas transformation. Maybe we will post some pics as we go.

Sunday morning’s sermon “The One of Bethlehem” should be available for download under podcasts within the next 24 hours. Everyone seemed to really enjoy this message which focused not only on the birth of Christ but the return and eternal reign of Christ taken from Micah 5:2-5. The key part of this message was not just focusing on the history of Christmas but the fact that there are aspects of the prophecy which are yet to be fulfilled…possibly to be fulfilled in our lifetimes.

The monthly “Stand Out” youth service was great with the whole congregation getting into the pre-service game time. The adults narrowly beat out the youth in the Generation Gap challenge, and the drama team did an excellent job with their “interpretive movement” (aka dance).

Of course Youth Pastor J did an excellent job with his message, “What Are You Running For?”, which will also be available for download within the next 24.

On a personal note, it was “cute” to see the pre-schoolers presentation at the start of service. Emma, Jemilah, Leah and Melody all were adorable and all the “Ahh”s from the crowd attested to that.

The video had some glitches, but after we get it all together and have a chance to examine it, we will either put exerpts on line or put a compilation together.

Now, as we go neck deep into the Christmas season, there will be a lot going on. Winterfest fundraiser December 9th…The Christmas Dinner December 10th…Christ B-Day Offering December 21st…and multiple other events tween now and New Years…Hopefully no one will get lost in between.

Keep in mind, that no matter how crazy things get between here and there, we are doing all of this to celebrate the life of our Lord and Savior. Don’t let the details bog you down, just keep pushing on being thankful that we have yet another Christmas to celebrate.

PS. Don’t be afraid to comment on these blogs. Just follow the links below. We had 90 people log on to the site in the first day of re-launch, and those numbers are only expected to increase, so let everyone know what the Tenth Ave CoG means to you.

Here we Go

November 24th, 2008

Well, with the re-launch of tenthavecog.com, I thought it would be nice to have a blog where we could share a devotional, a recap of recent events, a forecast of things to come…you name it, if it relates to the Tenth Avenue Church of God, we’ll blog it.

For the inaugural blog, I thought I would just comment on the wonderful Thanksgiving Communion service last night. It was so great to give families an opportunity to share what they are thankful for and then celebrate the Lord’s Supper together. What a powerful time of sharing!

The comments have all been wonderful. Everyone seems to appreciate yet another unique Communion service that invites elements from so many Christian traditions, yet presents itself as totally Pentecostal.

Have a great Thanksgiving!
